C5 steering wheels?

My steering wheel on my C5 looks horrid like its melted, is this an Exclusive problem?

Do the lower spec models have normal plastic wheels and do they wear like mine? Looking at getting another steering wheel from ebay.

The leather (its obviously not!) steering wheel is fitted to VTR, VTX+ and Exclusive trim levels.

For some reason some of them do 'melt', deform and get very sticky. This has been put down to the use of certain hand creams and/or getting fuel onto the steering wheel from your hands and it easts into the leather effect.

My steering wheel is still perfect, however im half expecting it to go the same was as my last C5s wheel did and so I have a good normal spare steering wheel (from an LX/SX) to replace it with should that happen.

So yes, if you can find one from an LX/SX or Design spec then they are just the normal wheel with no covering.

Thanks, will look out for a normal one, I guess all the greys are the same colour shade.

The earlier C5s have a slightly lighter grey interior plastic, though the wheel seems pretty similar.

The spare I have is from an earlier C5, ill try it against my 56's interior tomorrow and let you know how it looks. I think its so slight you will not even notice.

I think ill get another one as our C5 estate steering wheel is starting to look a bit shabby and I want to keep a spare for mine.

Will I get any error codes removing the air bag?

No, you wont, if you disconnect the battery and wait for 30 minutes, then start about removing the airbag and wheel. Its a simple thing to remove and refit.

The one on my C5 was starting to go but I bought a leather steering wheel cover, intended for a Picasso, and stitched it into place. It took over an hour to fit but, 15,000 miles later, it looks as new.

Just be aware if i remember right models with & without ESP have different spline fittings on the steering wheels. If the car has ESP the steering wheel has a master spline so the wheel can only go on in one position, i dont reckon a non ESP steering wheel will fit on a car with ESP.

You can get leather C5 steering wheel covers on ebay, might be easier if it will cover all the damage.

Did get another wheel from a lower spec car but that is not up to my standard.
Got a leather cover and stitched it on now.
