1.9TD Xantia not starting

Post by Citroenmad »

Im trying to get a bit of info as to why a 1.9TD might not be starting. Its a 1996 estate TD with Bosch pump and 108K miles.

It was running fine until a few days ago when it was difficult to start, once it did start it would cut out even at higher revs but would always restart. Now it wont start at all. The owner said the dashboard lights were flashing and the EM light was on. Both lights on the code pad are lit and adding the code seems to make no difference, the same lights are on and when tyring to start the car (with or without code) its not doing the usual beeps to warn of an incorrect or no code.

I have just tried my lexia on it, but I can't get the Lexia to work for some reason, it was working fine but now it wont. Though im not sure how much useful info I would get from the lexia on a 1.9TD.

Any advice appreciated :)

I assume you have tried unplugging the battery. I had a similar problem (immobiliser related) on my hdi recently. disconnecting and reconnecting battery with normal time intervals did not work. In the end i disconnected for around 15 mins, then reconnected and left completely alone (do not lock doors or switch on ignition) for an hour and this sorted it, worth a try
p.s i dont suppose the owner has tried unplugging the immobiliser keypad without engine running has he maybe check still connected

Any signs of fuel starvation?, Mine used to do this at roundabouts to tell me the fuel filter had had enough. (on veg oil tho)

Apparently the battery was left off last night and its no different this morning.

Its never been ran on veg but it its certainly something to check, thanks Dave.

The owner thinks it might be to do with the fuel pump, though it seems to be electrical as the code pad is not acting correctly. However if it was the codepad surely that wouldn't make it cut out.

Once the engine is running you can remove the codepad and never use it again.

One of my ZX TDs sometimes refused to start, and sometimes cut out at lights. It was the fuel-cut solenoid jamming up. Cost me a tenner and about an hour of swearing to replace. It seemed to play up when the engine or weather was warm.

This sounds ridiculous, but if I poured water over the solenoid - I took to carrying a couple of litres around - it would start every time..

Its worth also hitting the fuel cut off button if it has one. Check behind the drivers side strut top in the very corner.
