EGR valve , removal/blank off

Post by bxzx16v »

Would removing an egr valve affect or have any long term issues . I had one removed years ago on a 1.9td xantia and it ran better , just not sure about the modern diesels with their tendency to put the engine management light on at the drop of a hat . Thanks

Hi mark,

most people just disconnect them - now depending on which euro engine you have could put the engine light on?

the general rule is vacuum operation can be disconnected but electronic operation you are buggered.

should not cause problems long term but I never disconnect an egr that is not giving any problems.

It's a 1.9Jtd , the engine management light is on and the diagnostic says egr valve , it runs like a dream with no issues at all . Might try cleaning it next step , thanks

yes a good clean of the egr valve may do the trick.

which type of valve do you have electric or vacuum type? check the pipe work if its the vacuum type for splits.

are you getting black smoke when you rev it?

No black smoke at all , performance is 100% , it's just the engine management light which is a pita . Thanks

you could do with having the code read really as it could be a number of things.

The cars been plugged in and diagnosed as an Egr fault , it's just that their £100 + and I thought the cash could be spent better elsewhere as I have a few jobs to get done before the Egr #-o

hi Mark,

in that case take the egr off and give it a clean/de-coke - refit and see what happens, i suspect you will need to get the egr fault code reset after you have done the job mate.

also run some fuel treatment though it like millers at double the reccomended rate - this helps keep things clean.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but what is the consensus about permanently removing an EGR.

Mrs Lugg has a 2007 C8 with the ever so troublesome 138bhp HDi donkey - its just had its belts, tensioners and water pump done so should be good for another 50K miles.
Its had an intermittent MIL light for a while now, but this came on today and stayed on.
Fault reading shows P2143 - EGR valve open. Lots of black smoke upon giving it a good clogging.

So, do I just clean the EGR and re-fir (not something I want to embark on lightly as its hidden in the back of beyond in the engine bay) or can I get away with removing it for good.
Its a Non FAP but the valve is electrically controlled.

I’ve dabbled a fair bit in the electric EGR of my petrol C5 and it looks like the only chance to keep it shut is to get a Lexia man to turn it off, if that’s possible.

Blanking it off is detected by the MAP sensor and indicates an anti-pollution fault.
After removing the blanking, the fault display goes away after three restarts.
Disconnecting the plug also shows the fault, but reconnecting it then takes three weeks to come good to punish the fiddlers.

That’s on a 2003 car, and they’ve become more devious since.
When the valve sticks open, a few taps with a smallish hammer may free it.

Can't remember seeing the option to turn off the EGR in Lexia (but tbh I'm not that experienced) but Ecusafe definitely does has the option to turn the EGR off.

Gave the C8 a bit of welly down the M6 today and the yellow lamp of doom went out.
Go figure!

I'll dump some RedeX in the tank and give the EGR a clean for now. I think I just have a sticky valve.
Really doubt I'll get a modern diesel again after this one. The trouble I had with the V******l and its DPF of doom prior to the C8 really put me off.

Quick update on this one!

I stripped the EGR valve down and found that the valve was crudded up. I cleaned it with brake cleaner and got the valve moving again. However Im not sure that was the only issue as the electrical connectors were showing signs of oxidisation.

I scraped all these clean and put them back together with a cable tie for security and good luck and then coated the leads in some Dynax I had.

Cleared the fault code and so far so good. The pitfalls of running with the EGR stuck open were poor cold starting and poor fuel consumption when cold, once warm though it was as happy as a 2.5 tonne rhino on steroids and there was no appreciable drop in performance.
