re: bit of advice on 2003 406 HDI?

Unread post by carlo14 »

Good evening,

Could I ask a bit of advice on this ever useful site about the 406, I have my eye on a late 2003 406 2.0 HDI 110 AUTOMATIC 4dr.

I've heard horror stories about DPF filters, dual mass flywheels (Manual only?) and Siemans automatic transmissions.

Does anyone know if this car would have any of these three things?

Cheers!

Your in luck, the 2.0HDi 110 8v does not have a DPF filter (the only car which does is the same engine in a 307) and since its an automatic it won't have a DMF either. As for the gearbox, I can't comment on reliability of those, there must be a case for cost effectiveness of automatics due to the costs involved in replacing the DMF on a manual.

Should you get a manual version, the DMF can be replaced with a solid flywheel on the 2.0HDi 8v with no ill effects at all.

Personally I wouldn't go for an auto unless you have a specific need for it, the cost of replacing the box if it should develop a fault would probably exceed the value of the car, in addition the manual is faster and more economical, my manual will exceed 60 mpg driven gently.

Regarding the DPF and DMF I would concur with citroenmad. The 2.0L 8 valve engine is the best of the lot.
