C5 rev couner

Post by Peter.N. »

Yet another problem, the rev counter doesn't work in mine, not that I am all that bothered but I would rather it did. The problem seems to be a lack of pulses as the needle flicks when you turn the igntition on and off. As the management seems to be OK I assume the TDC sensor is working but the information not reaching the instrument, any suggestions?

Thanks, Peter.

Hi peter i had same problem couple of years back, what you need to do is remove the whole display case its easy to remove you need a small screwdiver to press the 2 tangs down a the bottom of the display case and the whole unit pops out.then unplug the wireing then remove the front plastic display shield, then on the rev conter dial there should be 2 plastic prongs holding the dial in lever these to one side and the dial should pop out when i did mine i snapped one of but super glue repaired it. Then you have to seperate the small plastic case that controls the rev needle on mine there was a small gear cog it had a very small pin going through the centre it wasnt sticking out far enough so i pushed out a bit and reseated it and hey presto it worked . hope can make sense of this but its the best i can do. cheers Stan

Hi Peter

The pointer is driven by a stepper motor driving through a gear train, failure is a common fault, do a earch and you will find a few write ups, the comonest failing seems to be actual breakage of the plastic shaft in the gear assembly, often thought that a drill bit of appropriate size could be cut down and used as a replacement shaft. In my case purchased a secondhand panel complete which gave me two motor / gearboxes the speedo being identical.

OK thanks. There seem to be some connection to the needle as it jumps when you switch the ingnition on, like an XUD with an o/c sensor lead, but I will take it apart sometime, after I have fixed the n/s rear window regulator, the drivers door handle, the .....

I used a cut down cheapy gold coloured nail (the type for picture frames) to replace the snapped off plastic shaft.

Nice one, a good tip to remember, certainly far better than the original :-)
