2.2 Hdi fuel consumption

Post by Peter.N. »

Took my recently acquired 2.2 C5 for its first longish run today to Bristol and back about 160 miles, fuel consumption on the motorway at a fairly steady 60 mph was 49.6 mpg as against the 406 2.0 Hdi on the same journey doing 60.1mpg. Normally a bigger engine driven under the same load will give a better consumption, what is it about these 2.2s?

I don't know but I have never had 49mpg out of ANY car I have ever owned.
I would be delighted.
Took Landrover for an 80 mile run today. Was very pleased at just on 20mpg.

Your C5 is a big heavy car with some power so 49 seems not bad? You must do a lotta miles if it disappoints you :)

49mpg! Wow, I do well to get 39mpg out of my 2.5! But then again, I would like to see what fuel economy you would get from the 2.5 Peter.

I guess its fully up to date with servicing etc?

Two things I try when our 2.0HDi 8v drops in economy slighty is to clean the MAF with some electrical contact cleaner spray. Usually does a good job. And also to spray in some air intake cleaner through the intake piper after the MAF with the engine revving to about 2000rpm. This often makes a huge difference and improves performance too.

There are 2.2 136 HDi owners on here who have got over 50MPG on average. If I remember correctly someone got/gets 55+ MPG from theirs.

On a similar journey I get around 50 mpg from the 2.1 XM but I drive very boringly, the figures given are at a steady 60 mph on the motorway, as soon as I leave it the consumption increases, my overall average for the trip was about 47. I don't think that the 406 is much lighter than the C5, the 'extra urban, consumption for the C5 2.0 Hdi is given as 61 mpg thats about the same as the 406, which is what I get,the 2.2 C5 is quoted as 55.4 extra urban but it doesn't do that.

Are you going by the on board trip computer for the 406 and C5? If so they are not always accurate. I know our eldest underreads its MPG by 3-4.

Have you considered the accuracy of the speedo's in recording the distance travelled? i.e. Are the cars recording the same distance for a set journey?

Hi Chris

The 55 mpg sounds encouraging but today treating the accelerator like glass I could only manage 49.6 average, it did jump to over 50 on one stretch but I think that was when the traffic slowed to 50 mph or less.

My average from the XMs on the journey from Axminster to Inverness has been 50 - 55 mpg, last year with the 406 it was 60.1 but judging by todays performance there is no chance of that with the 2.2 C5. I think it will have to go in favour of a 2.0L version. I must admit it does have a very smoothed refined engine and plenty of go if you want it, but I'm not bothered about that, I would rather have the economy.

Peter

The 2.2 is not best known for economy and the 2.0 8v does beat it in that respect. At least your current C5 has impressed you in some ways :-D

Well I know the speed and distance was pretty accurate today as my son had his satnav with him, it was showing the speedo only about 2 miles fast at 30 mph which is more accurate than the xm. Driving back from Scotland last year again at a steady 60 mph, when I filled the tank of the 406 it showed a reserve mileage of 1200 miles! I know it will do over 1000 miles on a tankful but I have had nearly that from the XMs.

I was struggling to get 50mpg from the C5 today when the 406 does 60 mpg easily.

I'd still check the distance travelled rather than assume the speed displayed reflects the accuracy of the distance recorded by the speedo.

my c5 2.2, which I miss massively was quite accurate with the trip computer, every time i checked it was never more than 1mpg out. It nudged 50mpg regularly on my commute, 45 miles each way on quiet country roads, but using the cruise at 50mph. On long motorway runs averaged 45mpg at 70mph solo, averaged 24mpg on caravan towing duties. I could get it down to 35mpg solo using it's 136bhp to the full. All in all I was very happy with the fuel consumption for the size and comfort it offered. Was the best and most reliable car I ever owned, if I did not need ultimate cheap running costs would have another in a heartbeat.

Hi Davie

Your findings seem to seem to confirm mine, I like the car a lot but I am not bothered about the power the 2.0L would be quite adequate for me - so if anyone wants a cheap 2.2 estate with a new set of tyres there will probably be one going soon

Recent trip from Bournemouth to Cambridge and back, some spirited driving, lots of traffic, although largely sticking to speed limits returned 50.3 in my C5 3.0HDI, in fairness it has had a remap and is the new twin turbo diesel that they use in the Jag XF, mightily impressed with my C5, now on 45k miles and impressing me more and more every day.

You gotta love these HDI engines!!!

yes well the 173 2.2 is virtually a new engine design, having done some studying of it they seem to have hit a lot of the defects inherent in the original 136 2.2, even down to built in oil traps in the breather system, on paper at least the 173 engine really impresses me.
