Hydraulic Clutch advise

Post by citroenxm »

Hi

Advise, its not a direct Citroen Part, but as the HDi 110 uses hydraulic clutch I thought I may get away with it.

I need to look at a Hydraulic clutch system which seems to have got air in it...

I started removing the slave cylinder from the gearbox, but as I did, the slave piston started comming out of the cylinder..

What Im asking is, Is this a sign of Air in the system,? Which is expanding as I release the slave cylinder??

Thanks

Not usually Paul, it's a sign that you've not tied up the clutch pedal and the weight of it is just enough to start the slave piston moving...

I've had a few out now and after making sure the pedal is well tied up, never seen this...

Those are a right bleeder to bleed... They're designed as a sealed system. They can be bled but it's not easy...

it shouldt have air in it unless there is a leak or maybe been tampered with, a lot of systems have bleed valves on the slave, the honda im working on now does, why is air suspected is the clutch dragging?

Hi Dean,

the pedal has a sort of spongy feel, and doesnt release the clutch completely... Only just enough to get in gear with bite right at the bottom... Theres No bleed, its a supposedly sealed system, but must have an air ingress some where..

Cheers Imperial, but as I hinted, its not a Citroen im refering to...

It's not a Rover 75 is it Paul?

But yes, the symptoms do point to air in the hydraulics. As t's not a Citroen I think you may find there's a leak, either from the master or slave that's caused the fluid level to drop so low that air ingress has been permitted. Rovers do this when the save fails and the slave is part of the release bearing so it's a gearbox off job to do it. Some Frauds are like this too, MKIV Festers with the little Zetec for one.

The designer of that idea should have been shot...

Ok... All wrong Jim, Its a Renault Espace 1997 R reg, 2.2 td...

Its a sealed system, but luckilly the slave is an EXTERNAL mounted one... however, got a simmilar problem on a Laguna 2 DCi.. but on this the pedal goes down and stays.. I beleve thats a master cylinder problem... however, on those the slave is inside the bell house, so they are gearbox off...
