"And a penny".......

Post by wainy »

Hi,

This isn't just to do with French cars..... but am I the only one getting irrationally annoyed with going to the garage to get £30 worth of petrol only to end up getting £30 "and a penny"?

There is another more sinister side to this too..... At Sainsbury's today I put £30 in and congratulated myself on getting spot on £30 as I put the hose back, only to get into the kiosk to be told "That's thirty pounds and two".... where did the two come from?????? Has anyone else experienced this..... is it a money making scheme???

I think we should be told.....

One garage I went to actually had a little tray with pennies in for customers to use if they go that little bit over.

Maybe the extra dribble when you think you're done is an age thing?

Just keep some loose change in the car. Simple...

I gave up trying to put exact amounts in long ago but just for a bit of fun I do occasionally, just to see if I still can.

Not seen the extra penny problem though, I must admit...

Some garages let you off if they're in a good mood...

Anyone who travels longer distances keeps a bog roll in the car. It's just good sense, and at a pinch can be used to blot LHM or blood.

As to buying petrol - is it not manly to use the preset buttons? Is new machismo about trying (for the exact value) and then being allowed to fail (by going over) - and furthermore - wearing the humiliation of paying for inexactitude?

I don't know if you are serious?

Pumps here have a keypad; before lifting the handle you can punch in the amount including cents. There is also a "fill" option where it goes to the first click - handy only if you have a bobby pin or 2" nail to hold the pump trigger on.

Nah see, that would mean they'd miss out on all those extra pennies.

The clip that fits the holes in the pump handle is removed in the UK, and they don't take kindly to you not holding it while dispensing fuel.

How are you supposed to keep it pumping then, while rolling a smoke? :? Or scratch your nuts while talking on the phone?

Here the lock-on is tacitly acknowledged; service stations keep the toggle lever on the handle but you have to supply the pin it latches over. D'you think truck drivers would happily stand there squeezing the lever while their tanks fill up with £1000 of diesel? Apparently the work safety bodies do...

Some of the HGV pumps have the clip still in place so they can latch the lever. The pumps are higher volume too so they don't like cars using them.

Easy way to avoid this....

Get someone else to fill up for you AND pay a lot less than normal diesel :D

Another method i know that works is at the auto fuellers that still have the older style flick switch to cut the pump off when you put the nozzle back.
Keep the nozzle in the tank and use your other hand to push the switch back down as if putting the nozzle back. The squeeze the nozzle lever as if to fill and some more fuel comes out :) not a lot but it all helps and the numbers on the fuel pump dont go up either :D

personally its now £1.26 a litre for me and im seriously considering buying BioD in bulk cubies to get the price down to a more reasonable level other than chopping my car in and getting a bosch'd xantia again now veggie is 90p a litre or there abouts, a nice 50% saving over diesel and better for the enviroment as well :D hmm anyone fancy buying into a fuel tankers worth of BioD ;) :D

Dare I ask where you buy diesel for £1.26 a litre

At the price diesel is rising (with another 3p per litre added in yesterdays budget) I might have to dig my VSX out of hibernation and bung some veg in it

Re locking the pump handle isn't that what the fuel cap is for? Wedge it in the pump handle, sorted :-D
