An MK1 or MK2 isn't so important, the important thing for me is that it's well maintained and serviced.
Is this the main things to look out for?
-Steering wheel sensor (How to check that?)
Lexia
-change of particle filter?
Mk1 2.2's only MK2's most all
-Some axle that can break in the dashboard ventilation (Is it possible to hear if it's bad and eventually going to snap?)
-Rear arm bearings (creaks from the rear? Wanders?)
-Wheel bearings
-Rear window mechanism.
Please fill in if i have missed something!

Leakage /weeping from power steering pipes.
Swirl Valves and related vac supply 2.2's MK1 and Mk2 to about 2006.
Radio mk1's check that they can pick up all the stations a known good radio can as there seems to be a lot of failures of the radio which starts with loosing ability to pick up weak stations gets progressively worse.
FAP's Mk1 2.2 and others only way of really being able to check the state of these is with a Lexia.
Would strongly suggest that you look for a Mk2 rather than a Mk1, many, most? of the deficiencys in the MK1 appear to have been fixed in the Mk2.
