Okay, before anyone says been covered before there's sooooo many responses on this topic that it'd take a good day to go through them, and half a day later still no luck.
Its a simple question though.....how do you get to the LHM? Do you take the holding bar off the reservoir? Do you do this when running the car? or is it simewhere else???? Any pointers would be appreciated.
The car is a 2.0i 16V 1999.

Not sure what you are getting at, but:
To check the LHM level - engine running, car in high suspension, the top (probably, might be the lower, Citroen contradicts itself here!) disc should be between the two red marks on the level indicator sticking out of the top of the LHM tank.
To see the LHM or use Alan S' 'finger' method simply remove the cap with LHM moulded into it in the centre of the reservoir (and usually having a small vent pipe connected to it) and look in with a torch or light.
To remove the LHM, put the car in low (with engine running if it has anti-sink, leave running for a minute or so, then undo the pressure release screw on the regulator ONE TURN, leave for another miute, then switch engine off) unclip the retaining strap, remove the hose and filter block (may or may not be possible without removing some of the pipes), then remove the tank (I think it's bolted down on the Xantia).

If you mean you wish to check the state or colour of the LHM fluid, then I do it simply by removing the rubber cap from the reservoir where you normally add new fluid and look in there. A torch sometimes helps to get a good indication of the colour.
You could also stick a piece of tubing or hose into it, stick your thumb over the open end, withdraw and let the fluid out into a clean container to examine it more closely. Another method would be to disconnect one of the low pressure return pipes from the reservoir, stick it into a jar and run the engine for a while. Liquid would go into the jar and you could then examine it.
Good LHM should be neon-green and clear. If it's a yellowy colour it's past its best and should be replaced. You can put a rinsing fluid in place of the LHM to really clean the whole hydraulic system well, but that's something else.
