Think I need a new starter motor.

Post by waynedance »

Today when trying to start the car I got nothing but a click and after a few attempts will start.

Guess I need a starter unless there is something else it could be.

If the click is actually coming from the motor it will probably be a faulty solonoid so the answer will be yes, you could try hitting the starter with something heavy that will sometimes bring them back to life on a temporary basis. If you short the two large terminals together with an old screwdriver this will likely make it work as it bypasses the solonoid, be prepared for some sparks. If the panel lights go out when you try to engage the starter check you battery connections.

you can also prolongue the life of the starter by fitting a relay in the starting circuit, over the years the wires break downand drop voltage to the starter, stick one in the circuit and you'll be sendin a full 12v to the starter, often helps!! very common on the petrol models, also worth remembering that a petrol starter is .9hp against a diesel 1.1hp, whilst they will fit the petrol ones take a bit more to fire a td lump, looked into it on my bx, run a xant td one on it with a 70amp relay in the circuit fed by a starter button, with a fresh battery spins over lovely and quick a fires straight away!
