Help!Saxo wont start after fitting horn!

Post by isisalar »

1.5 diesel 106/Saxo L reg
Fitted a new horn to the wife's car today and now the starter motor wont operate! There was a bit of shorting when I was testing the old horn so the first thing I checked was the fuses next to the brake fluid resevoir. They both looked ok, but the front one, when removed, looked like something had taken a bite out of one of the 'legs'. I couldn't see anything in the fuse holder, and a new fuse went in with ease. When I operate the starter the ignition light goes out, and I think I can hear a relay
working.
Is this the right fuse?
Anything else I could have disturbed?
This may be a red herring but the car came with a 'Sparkright' alarm fitted. I don't even know how to operate it, and it's never shown any signs of life.
Due to work commitments I've only got tomorrow to fix this, and if SHMBO has no wheels it's a major problem for the family.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Paul

bear in mind the engine mutiplug plugs in on the front nearside corner and that would stop the starter from working......

If the ignition light goes out it could be a bad connection on the battery.

Thanks for the response Chris. I'm not very good with electrics, What and where is this mutiplug thing?
I really hope it's something simple like a loose connection somewhere.
Thanks

I'm going out to the car now to check for any loose connections. Can anyone tell me where the fuse is for the starter motor?
Thanks

There's very unlikely to be a fuse for the starter motor as such, but there will be one in the solenoid (control) circuit.
You could either briefly connect the solenoid to battery +ve, and check that the motor operates, or monitor the voltage on the solenoid terminal whilst operating the starter switch. This will tell you whether it's the starter motor (or its earthing), or the solenoid circuit which is at fault. If the latter, it's a case of tracing it back, checking for volts at whatever convenient nodes you can find (switch, fuseholder, connectors etc). Do it logically, and you'll soon find the problem :)

Joy of joys, problem solved.
I followed the cable from the clicking relay attached to the expansion tank which lead me to the mutipoint connecter. I unscrewed it and it was a bit damp inside, probably some stray plusgas from yesterday. Re fitted and all now working, seems to have re vitalized the lazy rear wiper too.
Well done Peter N for pointing me in that direction.
Thanks again everyone for your help.
