Xantia coolant

Hi and a big hello to everyone on this very interesting and informative forum I've just joined the ranks by buying on eBay a 12year old xantia for 600 pounds which I thought wasn't too bad it's a 2.0 litre hid 90 hp model in silver. I live in Coventry and the car was based in Manchester done my research before I bidded and purchased a train ticket via virgin for 17quid when I won the auction . I was pleasantly surprised when I test drove the car how smooth the engine was and how remarkable it handled the roads potholes etc. Anyway got it back no problem used very little diesel . The next day i did notice that the coolant warning light flashed several times along with the stop light checked it just needs topping up what coolant do I use as it keeps suggesting in the owners manual to go to Citroen dealership .And if it needs topping regular whats the cause many thanks rob

if i were you, i'd flush out the coolant system and replace with new coolant. you can buy pre-mixed anti-freeze from halfords which will do the job.

and congrats on your buy. the hdi xantia is an great car, though i'd have gone for the 110hp version

Do you have AC?
If the coolant warning light and the stop light still flashes when the coolant level is OK, and if the level sensor is OK, you might have a problem with the radiator fan relay. A "common" problem.
If you have AC, turn it off and see if the lights stops flashing.
Don´t put it in defroster position. If you do, the AC starts automatically.

Hi thanks for the replies will check the level sensor as I've not used the air con yet apart from a little cosmetics ie parking scuffs on all four corners of the bumpers it's a sound car everything works I've inherited a bundle of receipts ie spheres cam belt changed the last guy owned it for 5yrs and I'm only it's 4th owner so that usually says the car is in good order
