zx waterpump

Post by andy46 »

Hi I am about to do a cambelt change on my 1996 1.9 NA diesel zx. I have changed cambelts on landrovers before - the zx looks a bit more complicated but will follow the haynes book of lies.
I have bought a replacement waterpump to change at the same time, I bought it off ebay for £12, it arrived today in a halfords box (HWP655), it looks OK but when I tried to spin it, it didn't.
I wouldnt say it is stiff but it will not spin freely and there is an audible dragging sound when turning it and holding it close to my ear.

So question is: Is this normal or do I have a dodgy pump?

Thats perfectly fine, thats the pump seal.. These water pumps DO NOT spin freely when new!! If they do, then they are worn out!

XUD cam belts are NOT hard... Once you set the engine to TDC and get the M8 bolt on the cam, and two in the jection pump, and a 6mm allen ket behind the starter to lock the crank its a doddle..

You may be best removing the starter (3x 8mm allen bolts) to find the crank locking hole...

The good thing with the XUD cam belts, its you simply Let the tensioner GO to tension the belt... then tighten the two tensioner locking bolts... One on the pivot (13mm) the other hidden (looking from above) below the cam sprocket (also 13mm)

I agree, they are OK especially the N/A Diesels - the Turbo's arer a massive pain as the turbo pipe blocks access to a PITA 11mm bolt at the back of the head which holds the cam belt cover on - which is a massive retrograde step from the clips they used to use!.It took me a relaxed full day the first time I did it - I think book time is 3 hours but I reckon you would have to do lots of XUDs tto be that fast!
