607 - What to look for?

Post by Trainman »

Guy's a friend of mine is going to look at a 607 over the weekend, what should he be looking for? are there any areas that need to be double checked, what should he avoid? etc

A bit more info on the type would help, and the age. Generally the 607 is a superb car, most of the garage trade hates them, simply because they dont understand them. The newer they are, the better, Particulate filters are an issue, but only like any other HDI. Tyres are quite pricey, and discs and pads on the bigger models.TPS valves on the wheels are a bit frustrating and expensive to fit.

To be honest, he hasn't said, I just wondered if there was an Achilles heel somewhere

Not really any one issue, they are generally very good. The car uses tech off other models, such as the 406 or Citroen C5, the electric window mechanisms sometimes fail, they also run two batteries, and the one in the boot gets forgotten because it is hidden.
Some of the parts are a little pricey, but cant recommend them enough generally.

As with the C5s, the 2.2HDi can be the most problematic. The very robust 2.0HDi 110 8v is available in the 607 but I can't imagine its enough in that huge body. My advice would be to find a later 607 with the 2.0HDi 16v 138 engine, same power as the 2.2HDi, better economy and generally less trouble.

The two issues I've encountered were both body items. A panel shop stuffed the eledctric boot mechanism, also another with OSF window reg failure.

All sold here, were ES9J4S powered autos - a good source of donor bits for 605s...

Diesel manual ones have a DMF so funny noises from there means ££
Diesel auto ones are "sealed for life" which means no one changes the fluid and it must be the correct Esso LT oil. However if the fluid isn't changed it will kill it eventually.
The DPF has to be replaced after about 80,000 miles or replaced and the aolys fluid runs out after about 60,000 and is expensive to refil.
Dead tyre pressure sensors and they can leak as well so the tyres are always going flat.
On early ones the heater flaps get messed up so you can't demist.
The mono screens get missing lines and overheat and are expensive to replace.
I had a front jacking point collapsed on mine. When I bought the car it looked like it was folded over but actually the floor and sill had separated.

Check that every electrical toy works.

I have fixes for most of the above issues, but sometimes you see basket case 607s that have every fault and you should just walk away, and sometimes you see really nice ones that are like new.

I like mine a lot as they are comfortable and not bad on fuel for the size of them. They are much better in snow than the rear wheel drive competitors but they do handle well.
