timing belt tensioner question

Unread post by aerodynamica »

Next q. Is the plunger on the timing belt tensioner pressurised by the engine oil? I was checking the tb condition and note that after a longer rest the belt tension feels slacker. Do I need to adjust it?

Answer, no !
The reason for the belt having less tension when cold than hot is down to thermal expansion of the engine.
Now using '00 Xantia LX HDI, pov spec :(

Hmm, I felt it had too much slack (up to 10mm) but when tighter, seemed nice and tight

the rule of thumb is whilst tensioning a cam belt you should be able to just turn the longest run of belt (usualy from the front of the cam sproket to front of crank sproket) 90 degrees,

so if you do this whilst the engine is cold it should be fine,
