Brakes - Shuddering

Unread post by KennyW »

Hi All,

I'm going to have at a look at my brakes all round as I'm getting a shuddering when I brake with reasonable pressure.

I changed the front discs and pads summer last year but I intend to clean the usual point where the caliper meets the support bracket and smear it with a little copper grease.

Also check the rear discs for any warping.

Any other areas to look out for :?:

Lower swivel joints (the ones between the wishbone and hub) and track rod ends Kenny...

Don't forget the rear discs and calipers too...

Also air in the brake lines. A full bleed may be a good idea...

Does sound like warped discs but it would be the front causing the problem, so it would be strange considering they were changed fairly recently. I had the same issue recently, completely resolved by a disc and pad change.

Wouldn't knocking be noticable if any of those joints were worn though ? And soft pedal if there was air in the system ?

Not necessarily in my experience... I've had a couple of swivels go bad without my knowing until I've noted play in them...

Also, check the wishbone 'P' bushes and the forward bushes in the wishbone. They can certainly cause funnies during braking with no other symptoms being immediately apparent. Again, been there...

Thanks for the replies,

I've replaced both track rod ends recently , the offside has had the complete wishbone changed recently but the nearside hasn't.

The lower ball joints have been checked and are fine.

I'll check it over again.

I'll give the brakes a bleed as well, which I don't if or when it was done last, possibly the culprit.

I had this last year on a Xantia estate, after the 3rd set of rear discs, we had to change the hubs, one must have been warped, coz that cured it
