AX Emissions Failure

Post by Shane »

<font face="Courier New">Hi peeps
I have a 96 (N) AX Elation with 106000 miles on the clock which fails the fast idle emissions test with the following results.
Result
CO = 0.28% Limit is 0.30
HC = 160ppm Limit is 200
<font color="red">Lambda = 1.04 Limit is 1.03</font id="red">
As you can see it only just fails but nothing will get it through, all filters have been changed and there are no leaks in the exhaust.
It passes the natural idle test with no problems at all. Does this look like a Lambda probe failure or am I looking at a new Cat?
Any help appreciated.

I've got a 96 P reg AX. As I reported on here I had stacks of problems about my emissions.
It may be your cat as your CO readings are quite high as well compared with mine(although they are within the limit). Do not go to a national chain with the initials KF for a new one.
PS I wasted £30 getting a diagnostic done as it was thought the lambda sensor might be faulty and it wasn't. So the choice is yours ...

Thank for your info leonardo
I've been and chatted with the mechanics at my local dealer and they are suggesting it may be the lambda probe giving the problems but it is not something they see with AXs (It would seem the ZX and Xantia are a different matter with lots of ECU problems).
Does anybody know if there is a way of testing the probe without using specialist diagnostic equipment.
Thanks

The fact that the zx shares its engines with the ax i.e. the 1.1 tu engine and the 1.4 tu engine and therefore the same engine management system and havent had many problems with they engine management system on my zx 1.4 yet touch wood. I would recommend that you get a diagnostic check done by a garage preferably not a citroen dealer cos it will cost you the earth. I would be thinking on the lines of new cat, lambda probe. Before I go the engine doesnt overheat does it cos when my zx 1.4 had its mot ages ago they left the engine running and the cooling fan didnt cut and the emissions went through the roof similar to yours. just a thought anyway.
Also your high hydrocarbon level may point to excessive oil burn. does it use any oil.

It does not overheat (Well the fan works and the light does not come on, it has no temp gauge) and does not use any oil. I forgot to mention in my original post it is only 1.0 litre engine if this makes any difference.
CITMAN, I think they were refering to the larger engined ZX and Xantia as having ECU problems. I do know that the local police ran 1.6 Peugeot 306s and 1.8 406's and nearly all of them required new ECUs at some point to enable them to pass the emissions check at the MOT. I'm guessing that Peugeot and Citroen use similar engine management systems.

Shane -
A couple of owners have had this emissions problems on MOT - various cars (engine types).
The majority experienced the problem disappeared - if the car was taken for a good long cane - really blowing the engine through when nice warm.
I think you should try that - plus adding injector cleaner to your tank.

THATS STRANGE BECUASE ABOUT A YEAR AGO I WAS CHARGED £20 JUST TO READ OF IF ANY FAULTS WHICH WHERE PRESENT ON THE ECU. YOUR QUITE RIGHT IN ASSUMING THAT THE LARGER ENGINED CITROENS HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THERE ECUs I KNOW OF SOME XSARA 1.6S ECUs THAT HAVE TO BE REPLACED DUE STALLING PROBLEMS ETC. I REALLY WAS JUST TRYING TO RELATE SMALLER ENGINED ZXs TO YOUR AX AS THE BOTH SHARE THE SAME BOSCH MOTRONIC SYSTEMS. YOU CAN BUY A GUNSONS FAULT FINDER DEVICE WHICH I HAVE THAT CAN READ OF ANY FAULTS IN THE ECU THINK THEY COST ABOUT £15.

Well, It passed.
I took it for 1 hour thrash before the MOT and as a bonus they have now moved the fast idle test for the 1 litre AX down the Rev range and it scraped through the Lambda test at 1.02%. I t may be near the limit but a pass is a pass. I can stop worrying about it for another 11 1/2 months now.
Cheers for your help guys
