c5 braking

When I come to a halt, the brakes tend to grab gently at the last two or three km/hr and the car comes to a sudden stop, not a gradual stop which one would want if driving royalty. It could be linked to the transmission resetting to first gear, but it also seems to be the brakes grabbing unevenly. Any experience out there with this problem? Or is it just my inexperience in using the very sensitive pedal?

I noticed the same thing on my father's Alfa Romeo 156 (it's manual, so the problem is obviously in brakes).
