Which HDi engine would be best?

Post by Mdon »

Hi all,

As I posted a few weeks ago I'm after another Citroen, I current have a skoda octavia diesel that was damaged but repaired in December and I have since "fallen out" with it! I can't really afford a new shape C5 And I don't really need a big car as I don't have kids or a dog anymore so I'm thinking of a C4 now. Which engine would be better the 1.6 92 diesel or the 2.0 138? I do a lot of miles so like mpg but I don't want a under powered car either, is the 1.6 any good at mid range power for overtaking?

I can't speak about C4's as I don't have experience of them but the 1.6 HDi engine is quite lively and picks up well from low rev's with very little lag.

The 1.6 is very economical (fuel wise), however it does have a few "issues", a well looked after one with excellent history and frequent oil changes is absolutly imperative. the 2.0 is a stronger engine, but the tax would be more.
I personally would favour the 1.6, but I could fix the , leaking injectors, blown turbos, blocked dpf, exhaust leaks around the turbo, and all the other things that go wrong on them.

Hmmmmm so the 1.6 isn't very reliable then. I think I'm going to have a think about this, I also quite like the Honda civic 2.2 diesel, not the most economical but fast and reliable.

How long does a turbo on a 1.6 normally last? I'm looking at 30k ish.

The turbo will last ages if looked after, but the oil needs to keep flowing to it, and the particulate filter must not get blocked, if you had no fap this would be ideal, most picasso 1.6 hdi's dont have one and run fine. I would change the oil every 6 to 8000 if I owned one.

There seems to be NO argument - the "Original" 2.o 8v HDi seems to be the BEST engine of them all.. Many in Xantias and Mk.1 C5's with well over 200k ALL original with no issues! I know of a Xantia with 283k on it with ORIGINAL turbo.. Though the oil seals are getting tired, it still blows well.

The 2.o HDi 8v in Y reg Xantias is around 90.75 quid for 6 months, 165.00 for 12 months.... then in Mk.1 C5's it drops a bit more to about 71.50 quid for 6 months and 130 a year.. (These prices are ACTUAL for this year from models I Know of)

So the 2.0 138bhp HDi in the C4 is the same engine as the 2.0 90/110bhp in the xantia and C5?

Not at all, the 138 bhp engine in the C4 has a 16valve head on it, cam driven fuel pump, quite a few differences, I think it is one of the best engines available today, it is also fitted to the new Ford Mondeo, many Volvo's, Peugeot 407, 308, 3008 etc, and the new Land Rover evoque to name but a few.

I have a 138bhp 16v C5 HDi and love the engine, its refined, full of torque and very economical. I can imagine it suiting a C4 very well. I also know, as Lighty says, they are very good and very well proven engines.

Ive driven a few 1.6HDi C4s, they are probably lively enough but the 2.0HDi would be the one I would go for.

Well after more than a month of looking at various cars I've put a deposit down on a 2008 Laguna estate 1.5 DCi. I looked at a couple of C4's and they were brilliant cars but just a tad on the small side for me and I couldn't get the new C5 for my budget so I've opted for the Laguna. I hope I've made the right choice!

Just want to say thank you to everyone who helped me in this thread and my C5 one.

Cheers.

Mike.

Oh dear.. Well Good luck. Hope the DCi is better then the earlyer Laguna 2 models, and the hydraulic clutch setup doesnt play up like a lot of Laguna 2 cars, and the electronic credit card start system remains reliable....

Ha ha, yeah here's hoping, I've had a laguna 2 and to be honest it was more reliable than my skoda and my citroens, the ked card even survived a trip underwater in the lakes when my canone capsized :)

It's an approved Renault used car so I have a 30 day no quible exchange period and 12 months warranty so I'm sure I'll be able to root out any problems with the car in that time.

Dont get me wrong. I DO like Renaults, thats Laguna 1's, 2's, espace's (ALL versions), R25's, even the little Clio... (Have to say that, my wife has one.. lol)..

But they do have a record.. But of course, the C5 has a dodgy record, some are fantastic some or bad, they all have it! NOTHING is perfect!

The LagunaIII is a great looking car (I'm really after a Coupe at some point) and they seem to be proving pretty reliable too. The 1.5DCi is among th best DCi engines :)
