Draining diesel 406 estate. Help please

Unread post by a4gom »

Currently stripping all useful bits of my 98 1.9 406td estate before iit goes to meet its maker and its got about half a tank of fuel in. This would obviously be better in my wifes citroen than a tank at the breakers.
Whats the easiest way to get it out?
TIA

We used to have an old Cavalier fuel pump (as they were external) with a length of pipe on inlet / outlet and used that to empty tanks (mixed fuel usually) via either the fuel pipe on the bulkhead or in some cases the filler pipe itself.

Does it actually run OK ? If it runs it may be easier to disconnect the fuel pump return pipe and have that into a suitable container, not tried it this way but its reasonably easy.

If you can get it above ground level you can disconnect the feed pipe, bend it downward and place it in a suitable container, jacking the rear up will help.

Remove the fuel gauge sender unit assembly from the top of the tank then syphon the diesel out with a length of hose, diesel tastes a lot nicer than petrol

Cheers guys a few options there, the car won't run (broken cam) I had considered connecting a pipe to the filter side of the prime bulb, dropping the pipe into a container and pumping the bulb until it started flowing. I was hoping this would start a syphon?

I've found that that doesn't work presumably due to the one way valve restricting the free flow.

Put washing up bowl under tank.
Drill or punch hole say 10mm in tank at lowest point.
Remove fuel cap to fill bowl fast.
My training was free and god help em if I catch them.

 There's some right bar stewards about!
I'll stick with getting it out of the top, i don't have a washing up bowl and would probably need more than one. I don't need the mess either, having said that the cars at my parents not mine.
