Perhaps it was running on fumes [-X and £20 quids-worth isn't enough to get the gauge off the empty stop?

More seriously, either the gauge or the sender is stuck. If my Xantia is filled to the brim, the gauge needle sticks on F until the panel is given a sharp tap (with a finger!). Or it could be that the complicated electronics are playing silly Bs. I could never understand why Renault? thought that advertising that a new model had 12? computers was a selling point - surely any sensible person would have thought "OMG! A whole IT department's worth of the things to go wrong!"
