Glow Plug Access /Tips Xantia TD 1.9

Post by ecohouse1 »

Hi

I think one of the GPs is out on my S2 Xantia TD as all of a sudden its coughing a bit and smoking for a few seconds on a cold morning start.

Changed these on my BXs, but access on the Xant looks terrible! Can hardly even see them.

Do I need to remove the turbo piping?

Better to remove with the engine hot or cold? (reason for asking - remember shearing one off on my BX TZD - ironically it still worked for years til the car was sold)

Any tips.

Cheers Alan

They're not as bad as they seem Alan, get access to them by moving the turbo pipes a little but the real trick is to get a good 12mm offset (cranked) ring spanner and some Blu-Tak.

Carefully remove the 8mm nuts from the top of each plug and remove the electrical bus bar between the plugs after stuffing loads of rag around and behind the injection pump to prevent escapees... Use Blu-Tak to hold the nuts on the end of your finger.

Then, with the engine warm spray a little Plus-Gas around the threads and with the engine still warm, remove each plug and replace. The ones behind the pump can be teased out using a pair of long-nose pliers.

When replacing the two behind the pump put some soft wire on the plugs so if they try to escape you can retrieve them.

The real secret is the use of a cranked 12mm spanner. I can honestly say this is the only too that will reach them successfully...

Alan, for the seemingly hardest one, I now put a 12mm spanner behind the metal injection pipes, adn can get a half turn on that one from there..

hopefully once you have done that, you may be able to unscrew using fingers..

yes re turbo piping, only one pipe.. this one is a pain, a horizontal jubilee round back under manifold..

also, things can get easier on the same end gp, if you remove the small water passage cover and the pipe to it, entering the head.. (2 allan bolts)

also, move the small rubber coolant pipes that meet in a 3-way.. or try to get them out of way..

To stop the glow plugs running away I tied a bit of wool around it and one of my fingers. Also helps when dangling the new ones back in.

It's a while since I've done it, but I wrote this at the time: Glow plug change out

Thanks for the tips. Ithink I will buy another magnetic teliscopic pick up tool! and I like the sound of the string on the spanner etc!

I have some Beru GPs left over from my BX TZD - seeing as they are both XUD lumps - is it likely the same plug?

Going to buy a 12mm cranked spanner tomorrow.

Cheers

I haven't tried the string/wool ties, but a good idea.

Certainly the use of rags (I also use scrunched up kitchen roll) helps stop the nuts /glowplugs going south. Telescopic magnetic tool very useful.

I also find one of the 18-24" long tools, with a craw on the end for retrieving small items, can be useful for retrieving nuts, though more of a struggle with larger bits like glowplugs
