Xantia clutch

Post by Robbie »

The clutch pedal on my 98 Xantia 1.9td is very heavy and I'm constantly worried about the plastic clip which broke once in France last year, a Citroen specialist here in the UK (not main dealer) told me I need a new clutch and quoted me about £450, this seems a lot, is it what I should expect to pay? could I just take it to a normal garage, or should it be someone who knows Citroens?
Thanks Robbie.

A normal garage will be able to do it for you, just choose one with a good reputation. I've asked in a few places and been quoted around the £300 mark. Make sure they use a decent clutch, GSF do the original Valeo ones at a reasonable price. My Xantia's on its second clutch, a Luk one was fitted at 110k, been on 90k now and the pedal isn't overly heavy yet.

I've just had a clutch fitted at 160k. The other wasn't particularly heavy, just slipping !
I went to a franchise chain with the word Clutch in the name ( mentioned elsewhere on these forums ), price was £250, but I ended up paying £300 because of some other work.
I noticed a pool of fluid under the car when I collected it - "It was there before" was thier response to my query.
"Wear and tear, it'll bed in" was thier response to my query about 5th not being clearly 'defined' anymore.
Checked it myself to find a bad leak from one of the pressureised hydraulic pipes mounted to the gearbox, and some pressurised pipes resting against the gear selection rod - preventing easy access to 5th.
Would I do it myself next time ? Probably not, because I can't afford the downtime if I forget something, or damage it due to inexperience.
