95 Renault 19 cabrio RSi-worth a punt?

Unread post by bumperman »

I've got first refusal on a cabrio as above for scrap money. I've not viewed it yet - anything to watch out for on these?
Owner says it has a "security key? problem & is a non driver". Seems a rare model now.

thanks

Can't go wrong with that for just above scrap value , not sure about problems but there's bound to be some more electrical gremlins

Hi Bumperman,

Obviously depends on the condition, but as Mark says that sounds like a pretty decent punt on scrap value. A security key eh? As opposed to a non-security key?!? You're not gonna buy a dream for scrap money but I reckon they're pretty sound litte cars. I rented one for a long weekend in Scotland and it goes us back and from our B&B in Edinburgh no worries! ;)

Good luck!

Right, thanks guys for replies so far..........
Today I actually went & viewed this cabrio. Not able to start engine or drive vehicle but problems noticed so far are:
1. security "plip" not working & current owner has dismantled receiver over interior mirror.
2. bonnet rotten.
3. Cabrio soft top(hood) need repair/replacement & rear window has gone very "yellow" & discoloured.
4. Rear n/s lamp lens needs replacing.
5. in addition to std m/s road wheels, there is a set of 4x Wolfrace 7 spoke alloy wheels(2 of which have a small buckle on inner rim).

any thoughts?

The Immobiliser problem with the plip key is a really common issue on old Renaults. A new receiver usually solves the problem. The car can be started by inputting the emergency four digit immobiliser code obtained from your dealer. For me, it would depend on how badly the roof is damaged, and how close to scrap value it is. But for what it's worth, it's an epically cool car which is a real rare sight now :)

id take a punt on it tbh :)

the engines can sieze solid IME of th f7p so check and see that it idles nicely.

The rear window discolor i think means its new roof time as not sure there is an easy way to replace just the screen. Does it leak at all??

The bonnet is the same as the normal 19 3 door IIRC of that age but how rotten is it? would it just need a good sanding and repainting?

Try and see how much a factors can get a copy panel for as they are sometimes cheap if they want to shift old stock, or try breakers/the bay.

For safety get a roll over hoop installed as if it rolls there is nothing to keep you safe :(
