According to the manual you do have to drop the subframe.

I know but sometimes the manual tells you that the engine needs to come out so that you can replace a :?: wheel trim ! Anyone actually done this job ?

What's the problem with the rack? If it's play on the inner joints you can buy them separately and they are quite easy to change.

Be more specific, please.

As to removal in-situ, I'd punt on it being well possible in trained hands.

How more specific can i be . Its got an inch of play in it and needs replacing . Just got the new one and it comes apart just as the pinion goes into the rack which would defo give me a fighting chance of leaving the subframe alone ,this means the 6-7 inches going up to the pinch bolt can be taken off separately. Gonna get it on ramps 2 weekends time and see if its get attable. Will let you all know.

I changed the rack on my C5 v6 the sub-frame had to come down about a foot and it was still a struggle! I was on my own in the drive, so you will need to get it up as far as you can,on wood blocks.
Stock up on elastoplast, be prepared to invent a new swearing vocabulary.
Good luck. Dave.
