niggley bits i found on my 406

My Key on the 406 theres a botton missing. Can i just put a new botton on it. Or would i have to get a new key?


My 5th gear keeps making a granding niose when i put it in 5th. I have to be really smoth not to make it grande. Its like its not that ar from 3rd gear. On the gate. Are all 406 gear boxes close to geather. Or could 5th gear be slowly comming to the end of its life lol.
Its when i change from 4th to 5th. Well basicliy when i try putting it in 5th. I seem to have to do it really slowly. To not make it judder.

i seem to remember if its the plip with one large and one small button i think the buttons are/were avalible from peugeot for not a lot of dosh,
if you send me the last 8 digits of your chassis/VIN No. i will check on peugeot service box, and get a price and part No.,

i think fith gear used to fail and i also belive it can be replaced with the box in place, as its in the end of the gear box inside the end cover under the N/S wheel arch,

Is this the S plate ? , the earlier two button key as Malcolm said you could buy the rubber part. They did sometimes break off as you have, usually 306 ones were more common for that and the smaller (deadlock) button in those cases. I *think* its 9926FC although that's the small button unless its a piece of rubber with both which is what I'd expect really.

5th gear noises, no not heard of that and not really noticed it, the BE3 box's are generally reasonably tough.

Yes its the big botton whats missin. What does the smalll one do.
Is it a hard job for the 5th gear to be fixed. If i took it in. Would they charge me a bomb,

i think that depends on how genuine the garage is you take it to, some garages might tell you they need to remove the box,
if they doi i would think they are going to charge a lot more for the job,
i dont know what the cost should be

Big button = lock / unlock

Small button = deadlock

To use: press big button to lock the door then within a couple of seconds press the small button to deadlock them.

You only need to use the large button to unlock, regardless of if you deadlocked or not.

Fifth gear synchro failure on a BE3 is rare.

However, it can be done in-situ - just. The job involves knocking out a roll pin on the selector shaft and then locking up the 'box by selecting reverse and then pushing down on the fifth gear selector fork to engage fifth as well. That's why the first job is to knock out the roll pin.

The it's a case of undoing the shaft nut on top of the fifth gear synchro hub and then carefully pulling off the fifth gear synchro hub complete with the selector fork. Here is special too is needed to keep the selector fork detent ball in place. The special tool is easily made up on a lathe from a piece of brass or plastic.

Pictures 5 to 9 on this webpage shows the job in detail, including the special tool you need.

The bugbear is the cost of a new synchro hub so recover one from another scrap gearbox. Likely it'll be fine.

On the key. It seems if both covers are missing. The small button is really small bit of plastic. Hard to press down. So im just wondering if the covers go on that one as well.

the small square/rectangled plastic block which is under were the buttons should be are actualy surface mount micro switch's,
so does you central locking respond on pressing these buttons/switch's,

Nope doesnt seem to be working.


You know the tape player. Can that come out. So if i find a 406 cd player. Could i put that in. Or does the whole thing need comming out.
