Why does boot light come on with heavy braking (Xantia II)?

Post by rmunns »

(year 2000 Xantia 90Hdi saloon)

I am running at the moment without the rear parcel shelf.

Today, driving in the dark, I had to brake heavily and out of the corner of my eye I saw a flash.

Repeating the braking, I note that the boot light is coming on while braking hard.

Whatever?

The boot light is operated by a gravity switch in the tailgate - basically two ball bearings in a tube that 'make' a contact when the tailgate is in the up position to put the light on.

The switch is quite crude and I'm not entirely surprised you see a light on under braking. Just keep an eye on it to ensure it reliably turns off when the tailgate is closed...

Normally they suffer the opposite problem - not turning on when wanted!!!

How easy is it to get at?
Cassy's is sticking off so I'd like to replace it.

Quite simple Xac, remove the inner trim and plastic liner and you'll see it as a small white plastic tube with one wire running to it.
