Early Xantia Speedo Cable

Post by citroenxm »

Heres a good one for SOME of us..

Im being prepared and cautious, just had a message through.. The Xantia Sinker, I have on my list, has broken her speedo. Im not sure if the clock its self is at fault or the upper or lower cable has broken. It could be either till I get there to look. I have had reports though of a "Slow milometer recorder" in the words of it records about one mile for every two travel'd... Speedo total milage is showing 189k or so...

So my Q is... for those who have had K or L reg xantias with Cable speedos.. How do you remove the UPPER cable.. I tried this when I broke an Early L reg car with out sucess and total'd the cable on that car, so Ive no idea...

Anyone Remeber, or know?

Cheers

The upper cable is a complete and utter ********* Paul

The cable is held in the bulkhead on a rubber ball and pulling it out is difficult to say the least. Getting a new one in is, well, nigh on bloody impossible. I believe it's an engine out job...

I did it once and dispensed with the rubber ball, or rater most of it. I trimmed it to make it fit easier. Still an absolute 'mare though...

Before suspecting the cable, I'd check the clock. The usual fault with the cable is they make an irritating ticking noise...

Thanks Jim...... :x :?

I was lucky with my Own 1994 SX TD, the cable still worked at 238k...

I certainly will check the clock first... I have seen a NEW cable on the Bay at 1090mm long for RHD and £18.99 plus £3.99 postage... theres also a shorter at 980mm I guess for LHD cars...

i did an XM upper cable a few years back which was a right BBB,
i think it involved removeing the glove box as the cable turned left from the instrument cluster and went all the way across the otjher side of the bulkhead,

maybe if the heater matrix needs doing it would make for an easier cable change whilst the dash is out

XM Cables are EASY to do once you know the route.. compared to the Xantia one that seems to be welded into place..

The Xantia cables go straight out into the engine bay first then go across to the gearbox .. but seem sooooo hard to get at due to the recessed Bulkhead in the engine bay, coupled with a high inlet manifold (DERV XUD), then a brake valve, then a Heater Matrix Pipes... you cannot get the cable in the engine bay to tug it as its all in the bloody way..

I so don't envy you.

Mine went and I drove it for 6-7k (ish with no speedo) because everytime i had a go at it I ended up hating the car. What I did in the end was route the cable a different way, I basically did as the XM does becuase there is a lovely hole in the bulkhead just behind the speedo drive on the g/box.

But yep I tried as you have previously to tug it, what I ended up doing was seperating the cable from the ball and swearing. The XM route is still working now after about 30k

Chris... What did you do behind the speedo head? The old cable blocks the hole for the new cable completely...
So there is enough room for the cable to run behind the dash? Id be interested in hearing further..

iirc (2 years ago) the cable comes out in a plastic trumpet, i 'removed' that trumpet and then from there you can take the cable into the cavity and drop down behind the centre console. You'll need to leave some of the trumpet behind for the cable to sit in so it doesnt fall out. once you get behind the plastic liner on the back of the clocks its quite easy.

I'm not saying its the most elegant of solutions but it worked and is still working now
