C5 - Auto vs Intermittent Wiper

Post by sonoramicommando »

I'd like to change from auto to intermittent setting if it is possible to do so.

The way it is, auto wiper usually moves either at the same speed as 1st speed or faster.
Some have commented that it's because the glass is not clean or wipe is not good enough (or words to that effect) - if the wiper blades are installed a bit off (maybe too tight on the wiper arm maybe), it doesn't show (well, at least to my standard the windshield looks well wiped).

I also read somewhere that if the rain sensor is faulty, it reverts to intermittent setting by default (and I'm assuming intermittent speed is less than 1st wiper speed).
If I disconnect the rain sensor, what other features would I lose? Auto window winding when raining is cool but I don't think I have use for it.
cheers,
sam

If rain sensor wipers simply work as if they are on timed delay the cause is generally due to the sensor not being pressed hard against the screen, worth checking, if however you'd prefer to have timed delay wipers you now know what to do

i'll disconnect and see i can live with it. i think it's possibly fogged up in there between the sensor & the glass.
thanks

I think the auto wipers work really well, easy to check sensor (well on mine). The surround arround the auto mirror just slides down, oh know this as my light sensor had moved and the lights were on during the day.

the sensor seemed to have come off from the glass a little at the lower end.
how do i take it off completely, it looks pretty fragile. obviously i want to take it off, clean it and glue it back.
i disconnected yesterday, it's better than auto wiper that is not working well BUT it doesnt work as normal intermittent wiper should, i.e. speed dependent. it seems to sweep once every 5 seconds regardless of vehicle speed.

If the sensor is like the one fitted to Xantia's there will be a yellow tag each side of the sensor which needs to be levered outwards to detach the sensor from the metal mounting plate. If the plate has started to come away from the screen don't use a standard/foam mirror mounting patch as its too thick and you'll end up back at square one, you need a very thin clear pad available from dealers or you might get away with using glass superglue.

Mine just pull out quite easily. Just clipped in.
The newer ones with a single combines sensor may be different.

the lower part of the sensor must have come off a little bit per the photo.
and it had a gel type clear adhesive over the whole sensor, as well as three clippy thingy latch onto the metal bracket.
i had to get the gel adhesive off because it got all dirty when i was taking it off - im going to push it in to the metal bracket and tape over it to see if it works any better.

I take it that has auto lights as well? I've seen a C5 SX 2002 with the same sensor as the Xantia.

If the Xantia sensor is removed, the wipers won't work at all!

yep - it has auto lights also.
i have scraped off the adhesive and clipped it back on. it seems to have clipped on pretty solid, not sure if i need adhesive there at all.
now all i need is rain to test it out.
it's a pity that sensitivity of the sensors cannot be adjusted.
