Clunking Xantia

Post by Fox »

Hi there,
When I pull away, every so often I hear a faint 'clunk' sound from the rear of the car. At first I thought it was something rolling around in the boot but upon inspection, it isn't this.
It doesn't happen all the time. Any ideas on where I should start?

It could be the rear of the exhaust knocking on the body. Try getting hold of the tail-pipe and moving it around, it shouldn't hit anything if correctly mounted/not corroded. Also consider that this could be caused by a failing engine mount. Likewise try rocking the engine back and forth, there shouldn't be much movement, its worth trying it with the bonnet up engine running and engaging 1st/reverse gear and gently releasing the clutch to monitor the amount of movement.

It could also be something as simple as something loose in the spare wheel / cradle.
I'd also check the brake pads are secure.
