Xsara Picasso windows and lift pump

Unread post by Rob81 »

Hello everyone,
It's been a lomg time since I have posted on here so I hope you don't mind offering me some advice...

My 2002 HDi Picasso has a couple of faults. Firstly, the dreaded in-tank pump is on the way out. 5 or 6 times now over the last few months, it has failed to start only to restart after a hefty clump on the unserside of the tank. Obviously, the pump needs changing but because there is no access from inside the Ppicasso, it's quite an expensive job. Firstly, am I risking any damage by continuing to run the car for a little while longer while I get Xmas out of the way before changing it? Also, if there's anyone in Suffolk who fancies changing it for me for a fee, let me know!

Secondly, I opened my drivers window today and the window behaved very strangly. Despite pressing the close button, the window sort of stuttered, going up and down as if somebody was playng with the switch. Can anybody suggest a reason for this; is it likley to be a fault with the regulator or other gubbins inside the door or more likely to be the switch itself?

Sorry for the essay and best wishes,
Rob

Hi Rob, not at all :)

Yes, there is a risk that the lift pump could be in the process of breaking up and allowing metallic particles to reach the fuel filter. These can penetrate right through and cause damage to the HP pump and injectors. Best therefore to have it changed at your earliest opportunity...

Bad piece of design not allowing easy access to the lift pump  Dropping a tank is no fun at all...

On the windows, I can't be sure if this applies to the Picasso but occasionally on some models the anti-pinch can get fooled and it's this that's coming into operation. Try winding the window right down to the very bottom and then winding it right back up again in one go.

Otherwise there may be muck in the guides that's causing excessive drag on the glass...

Thanks Jim. I'll get the car booked in for the pump as soon as possible. Any idea how long a job like that should take? I guess the garage will thank me if there isn't 50 litres of diesel in the tank!

I believe that Picassos have cable window regulators. Mr McKay sells kits for them, so my guess could be a duff cable.

Rob, one thing I should have said about the lift pump. It's not a bad idea to replace the fuel filter complete - housing and all - in case of a failed lift pump to ensure any particles that may have been shed by the old pump positively do not reach the HP pump and injectors...

I would trust, if your garage is a good 'un that they will recommend this course of action...

Thanks again Jim. I think the garage will do that (he's a great Citroen Specialist) but I will double check.
