Re: stater motor
i spoke to someone who told me the starter was incorporated in the alternator as this is the stop start model
Re: stater motor
That's correct, On the stop & start models the engine has not got a starter motor, it uses a reversible alternator to start the engine.terry1 wrote:i spoke to someone who told me the starter was incorporated in the alternator as this is the stop start model

Re: stater motor
How does that work then! Thats got some power then... Ever tried turning an engine over from the cam pully??? I say that as i imagine a standard altinator pully trying to turn the engine over. ..:-\

Re: stater motor
Must be alternativly configured as a DC motor Paul, won't be an ordinary alternator. I wouldnt have thought it would have been geared low enough, will probably only work on small engines.

Re: stater motor
This is nothing new... Donkey's years ago there was a device called a dynastart that combined a dynamo and a starter in one. Often it was tagged directly to the end of the crank or in some cases, the cam if on a 4-stroke motor...
They were not wonderfully successful and found most utility on motorbikes and 'Invacar' invalid carriages I believe, those old blue ones with a twin pot Villiers two-stroke engine in them...
A series-wound DC motor (such as a starter motor) delivers its highest torque when stalled. Torque falls as it speeds up and this makes it great for starting engines and getting trains moving (although not moving them at any great speed). The also work as reasonable generators, hence new electric trains having regenerative braking and so on... F1 KERS works on this principle too I believe although details are sketchy...
In start-stop cars the starter/generator will drive via a toothed belt I'd imagine...

The BMW Isetta 600 Bubble car did have a Dynastart Peter... Cute little things, I'd rather like one...Peter.N. wrote:Didn't they have those on the old bubble cars Jim?
Just speaking to dad about the Dynastart and he tells me I was wrong to say they weren't very successful. He recalls them being a great success although not may cars had them...

Re: stater motor
Nope, just a normal multi V serpentine belt. Think it's meant to be changed every 50k or so though.CitroJim wrote: In start-stop cars the starter/generator will drive via a toothed belt I'd imagine...
The engine is almost completely silent starting up, quite eerie.
The alternators aint cheap either, they are over £500 + VAT
Re: stater motor
af the alternator is so expensive could i remove my one and take it somewhere to be reconditioned if this is the reason the car is not starting

Re: stater motor
Firstly does your car have this auto start feature? If not it may have an ordinary starter.

Re: stater motor
Terry indicated it was a stop-start model, Peter....
What do you mean by not starting? If the engine is turning over but won't fire, then the starter is not at fault. If there's no life out of the starter, then it maybe the starter but could also be an electrical fault somewhere that is not giving the right signal to the starter (presumably this is controlled by the ECU somehow!). I suspect that a diagnostic session is going to be required to pin this one down...

Re: stater motor
Sorry another senior moment.
Re: stater motor
the c3 i have been talking about belongs to my daughter. she told me yesterday that when she had a belt fitted the garage also replaced the alternator, so i am now thinking maybe they fitted the wrong one, but if this was the case would the car start at all
