Returning home a couple of nights ago, the red stop light and the red light on the temp gauge starting flashing, then stopped after a short distance.
I checked the car the next day and nothing obvious but on Monday morning notice a leak, coming from the A/C compressor at the clutch, possibly a seal gone.I don't use the air con.
Is this the reason for the flashing red lights
Any suggestions

Nothing to do with the aircon compressor Kenny. This is an HDi so everything is under control of the engine ECU. It gets its information from the coolant temperature sensor in the side of the cylinder head. If the sensor was bad, the cooling fans would be running at top speed as well as the light being on...
Hopefully just one of those things but if it persists it'll need a Lexia session to see if the engine ECU stored any faults relating to the sensor..
Thanks Jim, I could'nt figure out how the compressor would affect anything. Will check the fluid levels again but I think it was probably citroelectrics again

Does the Temp. gauge work all the time? I had your symptoms and could get the light to flash to order by turning on Aircon, then counting to ten, the light then flashed, turn off Aircon and count to 7 flashing stopped. The problem was found to be in the multiway connector on the nearside wing below the battery, lots of waggling gave an unreliable contact, bridging a wire across the connector cured my problem. Probably nothing to do with your problem but who knows where the juice goes!!
Cheers Derek B.
our car spent Friday afternoon and Monday morning in the electrics area of the Factory!!
If the AC is on and the fans don't run the STOP / temp light flash. Not forgetting that the AC on a MK2 comes on automatically when demist is selected.... Stop with temp light on can also indicate low coolant level.
The air con is not switched on but there is a problem in that area anyway.
Checked coolant level it was down a bit and topped up same but lights have not come on prior to and after top up.
Will leave it mean time

Its a fault with the "SLOW RUNNING" of the cooling fans, of either one of the relays between the fans, or a wire in the area behind the passenger headlight, and fusebox area...
in MY experiance and argument, not ALL S2 Xantias have auto Air con when Windscreen de mist is selected! ONLY cars after W reg... And Ive had a few S2 Xantias aswell... even my current V reg HDI Exclusive does not do it, but my mums Y reg HDi and an X reg SX HDi Ive just sold both do it..

Be interested in the outcome here too. Have a 2001 Xantia HDi 110bhp on 89k which, surprise, surprise, started flashing its STOP light and temperature light at me last Monday.
Ran the car for 20 mins and local garage did too with no signs of rising temperature (sat around 96deg) although fans didn't cut in. Idled fine. However, the flashing lights stopped when the interior light came on (I had the driver door open). Since then completed a 110 mile round trip with no problem, during which we discovered that flashing will stop if blower fan is not switched on manually, OR the blower fan is set on Auto so that it's operation is determined by inside temperature.
