Xantia fans
Hi, Just changed the coolant in my Fathers 1997 Xantia , T,D, The fans are not cutting in, with the temp gauge at 100. My Father isn"t sure if they were working before the coolant change . Could the coolant change be responsible for the fans not working? any advice greatfully received . cheers Terry.

Re: Xantia fans
Well you could obviously have an air lock but it could be a problem with the cooling fans, a quick easy check you can do on the fans if the car has A/C is to turn it on and see whether the fans run.

Re: Xantia fans
As DickieG says could be an airlock but maybe worth disconnecting the fan plugs and do a direct feed from the battery to see if they are working and go from there.

Re: Xantia fans
Thanks guys. How do I clear any air in the system? Is it a case of; undoing the bleed cap and top up the system again ? cheers Terry.

Re: Xantia fans
Ideally you need to make up a header tank (an upturned squash bottle usually does the job) then run the engine whilst squeezing the top hose to push air out of the system. Are the fans working?froggy wrote:Thanks guys. How do I clear any air in the system? Is it a case of; undoing the bleed cap and top up the system again ? cheers Terry.

Re: Xantia fans
This sounds like the Common 3 Relay layout failure...
There are three relays between the fans behind the grill, hidden in a triangular box.. these control the fan speeds with signals from the Coolant ECU.. Its VERY common for the terminals to corrode and then arch and over heat and loose connection!
Remove your grill, then remove the top cover from the triangular box and remove each relay.. Id be sure you'll find a didgy connection in there... IF not then it could also be typical french wires and a break has occured in the harness behind the passenger headlight..
I find that for clearing air, open the Heater Matrix bleed screw and get the hot water flowing through the heater.. then go for a SHORT drive with the expansion cap loose, this then helps get all air out, and has worked every time for me.. Top up and tighten the cap..
