XUD oil cooler failure

Post by Old-Guy »

It's not yet serious, though it looks bad as a little (tablespoon) black oil in the header tank goes a long way. It (oil leaking into the coolant) only seems to occur if I use a lot of revs (>3,000) before the engine is properly hot. It's almost certainly not the head gasket; the cooling system has had an extended test from almost stone cold to fully hot for combustion gases in the header tank.

Can one of the gurus tell me how to remove the oil cooler from the block once the oil filter has been unscrewed, please?

Just as importantly, does anyone know if new ones are available? It seems a bit pointless fitting one from a scrapper which even if it isn't already starting to fail, is likely to do so in the near future. Has anyone examined failed coolers? If so, what's the failure mode and can they be repaired?

I've just tried looking up GSF's website but you now have to be a 'registered user' to get access to their latest website (no doubt fancier graphics and same old inadequate parts descriptions).

Quite simple really remove the two coolant pipes then undo the locknut on the main threaded tube onto which the filter screws then pull the cooler out.

I had this different (slightly) type but not a lot. They are as above a lot of money.

A used one does make reasonable sense (give it a really good clean and buy a new seal between the block and the cooler) to be honest as failure is very rare fortunately.

Thanks everyone for the helpful info.

 £250!

I wish I'd thought to take the cooler off my 'spare' car before I sold it. I'll have to post a Wanted ad for one.

When I get the leaky one off, I'll have a look at it with a view to devising a repair. I'm hoping that maybe it's failure of a brazed or soldered joint or a press-fit joint that can be silver-soldered.

I'd got the impression from the forum that because oil in coolant is more often a symptom of oil cooler failure than head gasket failure (unless the engine has been cooked) then oil cooler failure is relatively common. But then if HGF is very rare, "relatively common" = quite rare!
