Xantia TD Air Filter Box Removal

Post by ecohouse1 »

I am sure this car is cursed by the devil - literally every job I go & do on it ends up being scotched!!

Was underneath waxoyling all the HP lines and noticed a few in the upper subframe area not looking too cute! Couldn't really reach up from underneath with some sandpaper to rub them down and apply waxoyl. Decided to remove the air cleaner assembly to gain better access from above and what would have been a 2 minute job on the 309/BX/Xsara turns into a struggle! Saw what looks like a clip underneath to the airduct but couldn't free it the BoL was no help at all! Seems to be bolted to the battery tray - does this really need to come off as well?

Even changing the rear N/S indicator bulb was horrendous as the plastic wing nut was obviously screwed on by someone on steroids as its stuck tight!!!!! :x

Scared myself witless with some of the inaccessible HP lines on the subframe - can't even bear to think of any of these bursting!! You can't even get a finger on them let alone a spanner/heat source!!

Maybe my brain just isn't tuned in to the Xantia's ways yet!!

Slacken the jubilee clip to the rubber induction hose at the back of the air box.
Hold the airbox firmly and pull upwards.

For the indicators, just push down on the tab you can see from above and they pop out forwards, no need to unscrew anything.

Cheers Xac

Its the rear indicator on the estate, were you referring to the front units?

It looked like the air box is bolted to the side of the battery tray. I didn't realise that it just pulled off!!!

Thanks

D'oh that will teach me to read threads when I'm in a rush!
I've had to use pliers in the past to start undoing the plastic nuts on the rear of estates.

There's a vertical metal sheet that bolts to the battery tray which slots into the n/s edge of the airbox.
It also clips into the front of the flexible hose but normally an upwards tug releases it.

Funny this!

I only removed mine for the first time yesterday. Yes it is a clip on the front face (nearest the front bumper).

I freed mine with a big screwdriver and bent the 'slotted' plastic gently away from the air box. You're so right! The force required to move the clip seems excessive. As Xac rightly points out there is a vertical metal support on the RHS of the airbox (nearest the battery). Also, the bolt you see simply secures air filter plate to the rear diagonal stay of the battery tray.

And, again, as Xac states remove jubilee clip from air filter box.

There are also 1, 2 or 3 locating lugs on the underside of the air box which locate through some rubber grommets onto the metal plate. Only an upward pull will release it although I had mine at all sorts of angles trying to release the clip from the front edge. Until Mr. F.O. Screwdriver came out to play...
