Strange wheel bearing noise right after an mot
This is a car my mate bought tonight (04 2.0hdi est), it was mot'd just yesterday with seemingly no advisories, but on driving home he said there was a whine coming from the back, I drove it and yes there's a deffinate whine, it's not bad but it's there. Should he take it to his local mechanic (that he's used for the last 15years) and see what he says, and obviously if there's a duff bearing or on it's way out then go back and chin the seller......either that or contact VOSA I'm quite sure they'll be interested
Re: Strange wheel bearing noise right after an mot
depends realy on how much he payed for the car,
and as far as the MOT tester missing it, its not always obvious to hear/feel a wheel bearing without driveing the car,
a wheel bearing doesnt always have play in it when it is making a noise,

i was not saying how much the MOT cost, i was asking how much you freind payed for the car to weather you should go back to the seller with the wheel bearing issue,

flip side is , the seller could just go ` sold as seen` - you have no rights once you accept the car and drive away in a private sale , as the seller could argue you`ve been racing it for the last X amount of days... - if it has a valid mot then on the day in question it was 100% road legal.

IIRC, some of the later ones have the bearing as part of the rear discs too.
Regarding the MOT and testing, its only really valid "at the time of test" plus as said its not always apparent, they only spin them by hand after all. No play but noise is not unusual for a wearing bearing.

thats questionable also as at the end of the day its the individual MOT testers opinion,Harlequin wrote: if it has a valid mot then on the day in question it was 100% road legal.
you can take a car to 10 diferent MOT stations and get 10 diferent results,

Re: Strange wheel bearing noise right after an mot
ofc thats true - i was allways led to believe that the mot was `true` for the day it was tested and only gave an indication of road worthyness for the remaining time.

Noisy wheel bearings are a 'feature' of many cars, they can go on for many thousands of miles, in fact I have only ever changed them because the noise has become intrusive. Its very unlikely that you would detect a noisey bearing during an MOT unless the tester drove it.

And even if the MOT tester did hear it there would be no fail unless excessive play was present. The most you could hope for is an advisory.
