Am I expecting to much from an 02 C5 2.0 hdi

Unread post by Ian63 »

I know it's diesel and wont win speed records ect, but my 306 2.0 hdi is much nippier, yes I know it's a smaller/lighter shell, but when you accelarate on the C5 you really have to put your foot more/less half down to just to move off, whereas on the 306 you it's alot quicker, ie you just touch the pedal and you of. Both cars are standard, can a blocked egr (C5) cause this sluggishness, or is it just because it's a bigger/heavier shell?

It's also alot "bouncier" than the 306, but that's probably down to the hydropnumatics and no convetional springs

If it's bouncy in a juddery way then it could be some of the spheres are duff.
Is it the 90HP? Mum's got that in her Xsara and dad had it in his Picasso and neither had any oomph.

Id say Yes you are expecting a lot... even the 110bhp in the C5 is slow compared to the Xantia... if you have the 90bhp, then that would explain the 306 being much faster, as its the same identical engine and tune in a much much larger body...

It's worth checking you're not loosing boost through a split pipe or a holy intercooler. Oil on the pipes or on the bottom of the intercooler will give the game away. The intercooler in the C5 does seem to be a bit of a weak point.

On my 110 HDi Xantia I found a split in the short stub boost pipe attached to the turbo outlet. Replacing this made all the difference...

I can't imagine a C5 is that much heavier than a Xantia and the 110 in a Xantia is pretty nippy in my experience and that's comparing it against an Activa and a V6....

Seriously Jim, the 8v 110bhp is a little slow in the C5 compared to the Xantia... Ive a customer with one.. and it never likes to shift quickly... :?

Gosh, the C5 must be a bit of a lardy old thing then Paul - or else have the aerodynamic qualities of a brick

Believe me Jim (and the others) it's slow, well compared to 306 with the same engine, I took the 306 out tonght and felt quite quick, as i'd been driving the C5 for the last couple of weeks all the time.

Xac...you say one or more of the speres might be duff, if that's the case, it was mot'd about 6wks ago why would I not at least got an advisory on them...

The mot bloke hasn't a clue about spheres perhaps?
Very few do, and I'm sure you won't get an advisory for stiff suspension, only undampened, otherwise boneshakers like Golf gti's would always get them.

Have you got any record of them being changed in the past?
If not they're 9 years old now.

I've got alot of reciepts for stuff that's been done but dont remember seeing anything for them.......that aside though......for the size of the car, that engine needs more power/grunt

The 2.2 136bhp ain't exactly quick either so the 110bhp must be a slug. :?

It is :( ......I got remapped last week to a seemingly 135hp (there was no proof on the reciept of hp gain plus he came to the house...) there was virtually dam all diffirence for £250!! , so got him back to put it to standard and got a refund. He then said the egr was faulty ie clogged and to get that fixed first before getting it done again....if I was.

I'm tempted to use the 306 full time again, but I like space and style (inside NOT outside...it's bloody ugly....well it is from the front) of the C5....it just needs more power/grunt....decent grunt!.

The only problem is.....the C5 has 10 months mot and 4-5 months tax whereas the 306 need both done at xmas :(

I can confirm that the C5 performs less well than the Xantia, I recently passed my 2001 Xantia 2.0 Litre HDI 110 on and moved to a 2002 C5 2.0 Litre 110 it's not only less nippy it's also much poorer on fuel consumption.

I have wondered whether there's a problem with adjustment to the throttle linkage as it does seem to need pushing harder to get it on the move but haven't got around to checking that out.

When I first got the car the MAF was buggered and it was running in limp home mode but that was easily fixed.

As for the vehicle weights, according to the handbooks (I have both) the GVW on the C5 is 1905Kg and on the Xantia II is 1910Kg so only 5Kg difference and in the wrong direction.

Gibbo, I aggree with everything, I know my 306 is qicker/nippier but like you say about having your foot quite far down before it moves....mine's the same...that's why too when I go in it again after a couple of weeks in the C5, I flew out the st   because I just touched the pedal and I was off...unlike the sluggish C5...why did "s**t"troen do this.

I also test drove a 406 2.hd before getting the C5, it's kind of in middle weight wise, it felt not to bad, oviously the C5 needs alot more grunt just to be sufficient....that's my opinion anyway

That's not right, their weight is more like 1400kgs each.

As per Parkers (both hatchback models):
C5 Exclusive 110HDi - 1385kg
Xantia Exclusive 110HDi - 1436kg.

That's more like it. At a guess they've tuned the C5's more for cleanliness than power?
