Can anyone tell if I can fit a transmission from a 2.0 8V xantia to a 1.9TD?
Haynes used to give the gear ratios but no longer it seems.
Would the gearing be much different?
Thanks

There would be no problem with the clutch etc as the gear boxes are identical. Only the gearing differs. The TD is about 3250 at 70mph (is that right) and the 2.0l I expected to be about 3500-3750, trouble is I never took much notice when I drove it. I didn't think they are not usually very different. I was just deciding whether to bin the box or keep it as a spare!
On the BXs, Haynes used to designate gearboxes by model numbers, do they do this at all on the Xantia?
As another comparison, how would say a BX TZi compare with a 19TD? It's just a thought, but you would have to think that the similarity of the engines on those may be some kind of guide to the comparitive similarity to the Xantia. Possibly someone who has driven all 4 vehicles may be able to offer an opinion on that one.

Dave,
I can't pull out the exact figures at the moment but I thought the 1.6/1.8/2.0 petrol Xantias were all about 20 mph/1000rpm. The TD is over 25mph/1000rpm.
This makes a huge difference to the cruising ability of the diesels and I would say with a petrol gearbox the car would seem very busy on the motorway.
Also if you take the red-line on the TD as 4600 you would be rev limited to 92mph.
I seem to remember 1st and 2nd are the same gear ratios in both boxes but 2/3/4 are higher. Added to the upped final drive ratio that is why the diesels can often seem more refined than the petrols at motorway speeds.
I'm sure the driveshafts are the same on the 2.0 petrol and 1.9TD so that aspect should fit.
Seems a shame to junk a good box though.
Note: ABS still going fine thanks!

Gear ratios for C5 (hope it's similar in Xantia) - I, II, III, IV, V, final drive:
2.0 16V 138 HP: 11/38, 23/43, 25/32, 41/39, 44/35; 19/79
2.0 HDi 90 HP : 11/38, 23/43, 27/31, 45/37, 47/31; 19/75
In both cases it's a BE4/5 gearbox, similar to that in BX and Xantia.
2.0 HDi 110 HP has different one - ML5T
2.0 16V 138 HP: 11/38, 23/43, 25/32, 41/39, 44/35; 19/79
2.0 HDi 90 HP : 11/38, 23/43, 27/31, 45/37, 47/31; 19/75

I would think the ratios for the HDI engines would be even more different from the petrol than the TD is at the moment.
The HDI will have a broader torque spread, and therfore the gearing would most likely have been altered. Also with it being a heavier car, I wouldn't be surprised to see the petrol gearing different as well !
