Road noise and rattle

I have a C5 2ltr exl. auto. The problem is a lot of road noise -boots are firestone Z300 with lots of tread. I also have a rattle in the steering column at about 70mph (Citroen say a new column is needed) Could these be connected? Or has anyone got ideas to reduce the road noise?
Its driving me mad. Thanks in advance

Hi not sure about the colum rattle, but as far as road noise goes have you tried altering the tyre presures,

I've run firestone z300's on my C5 and thought they were one of the quietest tyres I've had. I've also got (and have had since I bought the car 60,000 miles ago) a steering column rattle, but only over rough tracks, and it has not got worse, so I have not bothered to investigate.
