Alloy wheels for Series One Xantia

Post by Stepto1 »

I'm looking to change the steel 14 inch wheels in my 1.8 16v for alloy wheels. The question is, can I fit 15 inch rims on my car? I know this would make my speedo miss-read a little but is this the only side effect? What other choices do I have re alloy wheels and does any one have any available or needing a good home? I live in Nottingham but travel to Plymouth most weekeds.
Thanks in advance,
Steve.

You can fit 15" Xantia wheels straight onto your car.

As you have 14" wheels you will have quite high sidewalls, 15" wheels will have lower profile tyres and so the actual rolling radius will be very similar.

If your not bothered about sticking with Xantia rims then Xsara/Xsara Picasso and C5 wheels will all go straight on.

That's great news. Thanks for that. My tyres will need replacing in the next few months and would rather put them on a set of alloys. I like Uniroyal Rainexperts due to their grip in the wet and dry but dislike the soft sidewalls. The alloys should help this as I intend to stick to this brand.

I'm glad you said that. I think they are an amazing tyre for 50 quid a corner. I've got 15k miles out if mine and I do give them some grief. They make aquaplaning a distant memory and suit the Xantia well. I've left many a repmobile behind on wet corners. They even got me off a seaweed covered beach when I was recovering a boat from the sea in Wales. The only other cars on the beach were a Land Rover and a Suberu Forester. Everyone expected the old girl to get stuck but with the suspension on 'off road' she pulled the boat clear, got over rocks you couldn't stand on, got through soft sand and then up a steep slipway with pot holes. The articulation of the suspension is amazing. I've seen 4x4s get stuck there before.

Update. Found some C4 VTS 16 inch alloys. Would these fit my Xantia?

Yes, very good tyres and they do appear to be getting more popular among people who research tyres instead of fitting any old liquorice band

They fit onto C5s and so yes they should fit a Xantia :)

And the fact they are 16 inch will be ok? They won't foul the wheel arches or catch on full lock? What about the speedo?
Thanks very much.

They may very well cause a problem when you put the suspension on high at the rear..

Because when you put thr car in high as the car rises the rear wheels rotate forwards.. Even with 15" wheels and a 65 tyre wall the tyres start to rub on the fuel filler pipe neck.. So i think 16" wheels will be too big on the xantia unless you use silly 45 or 55 wall tyres to compensate the overall wheel and tyre diamiter..

I hadn't thought of that. I'll make some measurements tomorrow. If I go up from 14 to 16 inch then I'll need 2 inches of clearence?

I'm guessing they are 16 inch? Is that a problem when getting tyres fitted etc?

The alloys paul has on his Xantia are only 15" C5 wheels but they have the biggest tyres, 205/65/15 if I remember correctly :)

C5 wheels in 16" have 215/55/16 tyres, which will be far far too big for the Xantia. However I have seen Xantias on 16" C5 wheels but the tyres were a smaller profile.

As those are C4 wheels the tyres will be smaller, 205/55/16 I think? Which will give them a lower sidewall and so they might fit ok.

Dont be fooled by the size of the rim, going from 14 to 16" doesn't mean you need 2" more room around the tyre, the size of the tyre will help compensate for that. You might well need to fit smaller tyres to get them to fit if you go for 16". A lot of Xantias came with 15" and so as long as they are around 195.65.15 or 205.60.15 tyres then they will be fine. As paul says his 205.65.15s are a tight fit and probably look over tyred on a Xantia.

To check for the rolling radius try searching for a rolling radius calculator on google and put in your current tyre size and that of the wheels you might get. That will give you an idea of how much differece there will be and also how far the speedo might be out. Xantias are rarely spot on in the speedo department so you shouldn't have a worry there, the wheels might correct the difference.

Something to think about is the width of the alloy, and also the offset, to make sure it doesn't foul the bodywork or the wheel arch liners.

Chris,

Do Xsara/Xsara Picasso/C5 wheels all have the same offset as on the Xantia? Do you know what the Xantia's offset actually is?

On 5½J wheels it's 8mm outboard of the centreline.

On 6J wheels it's 16mm (my measurements, both) - they say 15mm.
