oil pressure switch

My son has become the proud owner of a 57 Clio Campus Sport with only 3k on the clock. Sat in it the other day, I turned on the ignition but did not start the engine. All the instrument lights on the dash came on for a short while then went out including the oil pressure light. The charge light stayed on. I have never had a car where this has happened before. My reaction is if the light is out and the engine not running the switch is faulty. Where is the switch on block, and how can it be checked? I have talked with the local dealers and they have shown me that this seems to be normal for Renaults, it worries me, and goes against my gut feelings.
