Crank Pulleys: Interesting Video

Unread post by CitroJim »

Everything you wanted to ever know about Crank Pulleys but was afraid to ask...

I believe the 2.0 HDi has a decoupler type. Doesn't stop it failing though

I thought the dual-mass pulley was supposed to do that - in fact the Freudenberg pulley is just that.

Looks impressive but no doubt they show the best bits and 'forget' the other less impressive ones.

There is a Freudenberg pland a few miles from here and we used to supply them with signage, always wondered what they did.

Sounds like a South African provincial town...

I wonder that about a lot of firms you see in industrial estates... In MK there was once a big outfit called 'Eurobuns'

Turns out they made the bakery items for McDonalds and the ilk...

They've gone now... Shame the same can't be said about McDonalds really...

Great video link Jim, this will be interesting for my guys at work

I see many times mechanics replacing ribbed belt tensioners where its clear the crank pulley is the cause of the problem

The failed one I removed from mine was like the one in the video but the replacement from a motor factor looked solid. It isn't of course, just an improved design of decoupled pully.
I had always wondered why my tensioner oscillated so much ! It's completely smooth now.
Now using '00 Xantia LX HDI, pov spec :(

My Xantia is still on its original pulley at 121k - no discernable play when we changed the belt at 110k. No idea why that should be when most go at <80k :? Just saving up trouble for another day, and I'll have jinxed it now

Mine reached about 170 K miles before it was about to totally fail. However, I had noticed the tensioner oscillating from about 120 K miles so it was probably on it's way out then I just didn't realise it !
The replacement is a Corteco from a factor.

The guys who changed my cambelt insisted on changing the pulley and a tensioner or two at the same time.

At 121 thousand miles that was, so it presumably wouldn't have lasted much longer if I'd declined.

Bearing in mind that's it's probably translated from German I think they mean a single belt rather thana single V.

Certainly poly-V belts are just about universal whereas there aren't that many cars with more than one belt.

I really wasn't going to watch that video Xac. Now you've mentioned something that should be completely unrelated, I must
