308 useless horn

Post by Zutalors »

Of course this could relate to any car but specifically it's my 308. As others here have said, the horn on 308's is awful..sounds like a adenoidal sea lion. My old 406 had a proper one, people sure took notice when that blasted out a tune!

Now, having spent quite a few summers in France I know the sound of a French car horn :roll: and I'm certain that 'real' French 308's will have the usual blaring klaxon, which all cars over there seem to be fitted with.

So, on to the techical issue - if I were to buy a replacement horn from a French dealer, is it just a simple swap or would there be other things to change, relay fr'instance....? If it's too complex then I am going to get a mate to fit a Halfords replacement as I've had enough being cut up by HGV's :evil:

These Nautilus air horns seem to be quite popular.

I was going to get one then used my standard horn with my window open and was surprised how loud it was :shock:

Maybe a C5 horn from a breaker would be satisfactory?

I'm always tempted by the CX airhorns :)

Stebel Nautilus is a good unit! Excellent value for a Euro made horn.

It may be the 308 in question only has the single horn, not the high/low pair. I've fitted dual Alfa 'leccy horns from 147s, to a couple of cars - good clear dissonance. That plus a Nautilus, would get heard...

I bought a pair of Saab 9-5 horns for 99p on eBay to put in my MKII Laguna. It went from a noddy car horn to a ships fog horn. :D

Many thanks for the replies!! I have a friend in France who has just bought a new 308 so I am going to do a comparison next time I see her :naughty:

I once stayed in Paris with Mrs.Zutalors and the hotel gave us a room with a balcony overlooking the street - very nice, until 1am. Paris doesn't sleep and the horns just kept going through the small hours, and they all had the same loudness and tone. So why the 308 is so rubbish is a mystery to moi.... :-k

Well, an interesting development, thanks to a Google search for 'Peugeot 308 klaxon'

I ended up on a French Peugeot forum, where, quelle surprise, someone was moaning about his 308's crappy horn;

http://www.forum-peugeot.com/Forum/foru ... 2537_1.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

All in French, but thanks to Google translate and a bit of knowledge of the lingo gave the answer that 308's come with different horns depending on the sub-model. And, thanks to the nice people at Guy Perry, I had a dual-tone horn delivered a few days later (Part number 6236H9) It's a straight one-for-one swap, and now big Pug has a proper toot worthy of the marque. Happy days!!

Appears to be (from the drawings on that forum) basically what I suggested - a high/low pair instead of the single note.

What is interesting/annoying is how they've made it a "monopoly" part by using one plug to feed the both - earlier cars had a spare plug when only fitted with one horn.

Glad it's satisfactorily fixed, either way.

My daughters 307SW has a weedy peep for a horn. I have got a set from a Volvo240 to fit to it, well hopefully anyway ( just waiting for the garage resolve another issue before we fit them). I got them from a scrappy, took a chance on them working. Once home I touched the wires onto the battery and even though I was 'ready' I nearly jumped out of my skin! :lol: PAAAAAAAARRRRRRP :lol:
