Morning all - the car is a '98 406 td (138000 on the clock) estate which is great but I have noticed on acceleration It does tend to throw out a bit of smoke - when pushed the smoke is enough to for something of a cloud behind me - I have changed the air filter and added an injector cleaner over the last two or three tanks of fuel but it is still the same - any ideas for cause or suggestions as to why this is happening or is it just t he way it is ? -
I also have anintermitent starting fsult which I hink is the solenoid on the starter sticking as when I tap the solenoid it ususally starts first time -is it possible to strio the solenoid and clean or replace the defective pieces or must it be a replacement starter - which seems reakky expensive.

not sure on the smokey fault, but the starter sounds like brush's sticking and or worn down/out,
with worn/badly conecting brush's it will burn out the comutator eventualy,
and yes they can usualy be fixed if caught before extensive damage is done,
do you have an AUTO sparks local to you, as they wull usualy repair alt's and starters for a resonable fee, my local one dose anyhow,

Are you sure that the 'smoke' is actually smoke and not soot, if its smoking it will do it continually. If you normally drive fairly gently you get an accumulation of soot in the exhast system, when you boot it the added velocity of the gasses dislodge the soot and expel it. If you drive it flat out in low gear a few times you will probably find that the 'smoke' dissapears - always a good idea to do this on the way to the MOT!
I have recently had an issue on the starter of a 405, same starter same problem, this one had an intermittent short on the solonoid windings and would sometimes not engage. I could smell the product of arcing when I took it off, had to replace the starter. Managed to pick up an brand new boxed one on ebay for £15.00.
I don't suppose you will be so lucky but you can get them for about £60.00. It made a tremendous difference to the cranking speed.
