infact it was the cambelt tonsioner that failed on a 405 turbo diesel
engine spins on the key with no clunking noises
do you think it is worth putting a cambelt and tensioner back on to try
the car isnt in to bad condition

Bad luck there Dai, it gets worse I'm afraid cos' the camshaft always leaves at least two valves partialy open in any position at best, so spinning the engine would cause the pistons to hit them.
Take the rocker cover off and see it the camshaft is still in one piece, if it is try turning the engine by hand only while feeling for compression on each cylinder, turning the camshaft by hand to close the relevant valves as you go, but only turn the crank slowly, if you get compo on all pots then stick a belt on, it has been known for folk to get away with broken belts, but of those I know of all were only during very low speed not much more than ticking over, belt breakages at speed always trashed the things.
