Poor Hot Starting. 2002 C5 2.2 HDi Exclusive

Post by kraM »

Morning

I have a 2005 2.2 HDi Exclusive C5 Estate with about 107K on the clocks.

My C5 starts on the button when cold, but hot start cranks for about 5 - 10 seconds before starting.

Is this normal, if not (and I hope if not), any clues please?

Thank you

Mark

Sadly this is a bump...

Please, please does anyone know why my now 109'000 mile old 2002 2.2HDI C5 manual Estate makes me feel like i'm back in the 1980's, cranking and cranking until the ba*tard starts? Not too bad when stone cold, but the warmer she gets, the more reluctant she is to start.

And, I get out dragged by milk floats off the line, but in third upwards, she stomps off up the road...

Dunno if it is relevant, but the oil level sensor is knackerd, saying it is either over full or empty.

Oh and it has also developed two suspension fluid leaks

Apart from that, it's great, has not missed a beat.

Happy New Year, may you all have a trouble free Citroen for the next 12 months [-o<

Hi Mark

Don't know to much about Hdi engines, the one I have has never gone wrong :-D I thought I would reply though just to let you know someone is reading your mail. I think you need a Lexia session, could be low fuel pressure or maybe a faulty sensor, obviously not a common fault.

On the 2,0 8V HDi this is usually a sign of a faulty injector. Maybe it's the same with the 2,2.

When the engine is started, pull the return hose of each injector, and put it in a bottle. Se how much fuel it leaks in 30 seconds. My guess will be, that one of them will leak noticeably more then the others.

I think that the injector theory is very plausible, seems to me that a partially blocked injector when cold may well get more blocked when hot and all it's bits have expanded, would explain the poor performance as well.

If its an injector fault why does it only do it when warm/hot and not cold? Does the 2.2HDi have a crankshaft/tdc position sensor? I know these can go "blind" when hot and cause long crank/no start problems.

Thank you all so much for replying, when I get a moment, I'll do the Lexia thing and play with my leak off pipes. Can any one reccommend a geed Citroen specialist in the Maidenhead (East Berkshire)area?

Cheers again

Just done the leak off test, 3 injectors are dripping out, the 4th was a steady stream... me thinks this may be the dodgey one? And there I was thinking that I would have some money to spend on me this month, but oh no, the mighty coal burner decided it wanted some of it  ! Hopefully this will cure it of its main fault, which is handy, as the air con has just stopped working...

Trouble is with buying one, injectors really need to be a matched set, I suggest that it might be better to remove all four and take them, to somewhere that can overhaul and calibrate them. That may be a tad more expensive but at least they should be good for another 100K.

Cheers for the e-bay link.

mmm the suggestion for getting them matched... is there a reason for this, as in they need to be coded to the ECU, or are they plug and play?

All four injectors leaked different amounts, but only very slightly, except for the knackerd one. How much is a injector overhaul, and can they really fine tune them?
Bearing in mind, the car is worth about £1600, I don't really want to be spending 25% of its value on injectors, unless it really warrants it. (As the air con and suspension leak are probably eat the rest of my money)

Cheers

Sorry to bump an 11-year old thread, but in my case the same problem was caused by degraded o-rings on the high-pressure fuel pump regulator valve, causing it to stick open, preventing fuel pressure from building. It can be found underneath and to the left of the fuel filter housing.
