Engine Oil Change

Post by frenchcarnut »

Hi all. Need to do my annual engine oil servicing before a longish journey and have just been given a GM/Mobil Dexos2 oil of 5W30 Fully synthetic rating. Normally go for a 5W40.

Happy with the 5W rating but just a bit concerned about the 30 versus 40 hot viscosity rating.

However, most online recommendations on reg default to a 5W40 or a 10W40 with Halfords going from 0-10W/40

Any thoughts?

30 in a Diesel is unwise. Go for the 10w40.

I've always used 10W40 in all PSA vehicles at least as far as I can recall.

I have used the (recommended) Total Quartz 9000 5w30 in mine for the past five years with no problems observed. Not in regard to engine lubrication anyway.

For my age vehicle, was the Quartz 7000 Diesel 10W/40 the recommendation? Can't find it in the service books or manual anywhere.

I have been using 5W40 FS for the last few years no problem.

I'm sure 5w40 or 10w40 will be OK in the UK.
It hangs on the expected ambient temperatures and ours are generally within a fairly narrow margin.

Total Quartz 7000 is semi synthetic and 9000 fully synthetic, a recommended supplier I've used several times with excellent service is Chandlers Oils keen pricing with very quick delivery.

That is what our 2.0HDi 110 has been on for years and years too and the engine could not be better.

Am I right in thinking that Citroen recently withdrew the 5W-30 option from those recommendations? If so, presumably it proved too thin to properly protect the engine.

Thanks everyone. I plumped for a 5W40 in the end as in previous years. Information gratefully received and acted upon.
