The Xantia's ill again!

I could do with some logical minds and some experience please...

She's been running really flat for a couple of weeks now, just like an intercooler pipe off but a bit poor off boost too:
• Really struggles at anything like a hill, but will just do 80mph on the flat/down hill given time;
• Difficult to rev from idle sometimes;
• Lumpy delivery 1800-2000rpm but smooth elsewhere;
• And NO smoke from the exhaust!

I'm pretty sure I started it. She was running fine before but a bit slow coming onto boost. So like an idiot I decided to adjust the boost 'star wheel' to weaken the spring to bring boost on sooner. Disaster – straight away no pull at all.

Since then I have tried to put things back. I've had the 'star wheel' screwed in, and out. And I've had the off boost screw at the top screwed in – right in – and out. All combinations until I have no idea where I started, and she's still as dead as a Dodo. Things have improved a little, but definitely no boost.

I have adjusted the boost part of the pump lots, replaced the fuel filter, cleaned the fuel sender filter, checked the flexible intercooler pipes and connections and run without an air filter. I don't know if I'm getting any boost pressure but the pipes do inflate if the engine is revved.

Has anyone any ideas?

Be CERTAIN an intercooler pipe has not split..

I bought a Blue TD xantia with exactly your sumptoms!!To go, okish on the flat, and I decided to do a turbo swap... it was then when I started stripping down I then spotted a rather externally oily gearbox casing, under the air cleaner/battery tray... it was then I found a split intercooler pipe right out of the way!!!

I fitted a replacment, and whoo hooooo she was resotred!!

Dave,

Check the turbo inlet and outlet pipes if not correctly fitted can cause similar problems.

Thanks chaps, it always did point toward a turbo/intercooler problem. Did a test on the way home from work: took the hose clip off the intercooler pipe to see if it had enough pressure to blow apart - it did but I didn't notice any difference! So it does build up a bit of pressure, just not enough to effect the fueling.

Took all the intercooler pipes off last night. The flexi pipes are still ok (I had checked these). I may have discovered a small hairline fracture in the turbo to intercooler solid pipe. It's on the inside of the big bend at the bottom - I couldn't get it to open noticeably when the pipe was flexed. Gave it a bodge mend.

Will test run tonight to see if it is any better. I would have taken the car into work today but the mend I had done on the power steering supply pipe is leaking quite badly.

It's just one thing after another since I put it back together after it's 2 year overhaul...

No leaks in the small pipe that goes to the boost compensator?
